The Pianist is a 2002 biographical war drama film directed by Roman Polanski, starring Adrien Brody. It is an adaptation of Death of a City, a World War II memoir by the Jewish-Polish musician Władysław Szpilman.
After narrowly escaping his family’s fate in the concentration camps, Szpilman goes into hiding in Nazi controlled Warshaw, surviving on dwindling food supplies smuggled to him by members of the the Polish underground. During the course of which, he witnesses both the Ghetto Rising and the doomed Warshaw Rising, until finally being ‘liberated’ by Polish and Soviet forces in 1945.
